Our Story

With nearly 50 years of commitment to the Hereford breed and cattle industry, the present years are the most exciting yet! We have been involved in the cattle business since the early 1970s, when Jim first purchased acreage in Leake County, Mississippi and added a Hereford bull and a group of commercial cows.

Over the next few years, the herd grew, more land was purchased, pastures were improved, and Jim decided to add purebred cattle to the operation. We entered the registered Hereford business with the purchase of cattle in the BC Rogers Polled Hereford dispersal. Since then, we have increased numbers by purchasing quality cattle from herds across the U.S. and Canada. Today, the herd consist of over 100 registered females and 25 commercial cows that are used as recipients. The breeding program of Broadlawn Farm includes a very extensive embryo transfer program. This program has featured several donor females that are famous throughout the Hereford breed. The embryo transfer program multiplies the farm’s best cows, as well as genetics from eggs harvested from some of the top cows in herds in Kansas, Wyoming and Canada.

The Broadlawn Farm breeding season is a 75-day time frame for both fall and spring calving, with the largest number of calves coming in the fall. For almost 30 years, Jim has operated under the American Hereford Association’s Total Performance Records program. Involvement in this program allows us to keep complete records on all of our cattle. These records are used in making decisions on matings and cullings. The farm uses a complete herd health program under the guidance of veterinarian Dr. Steve Green. We also use a program of forage management that provides all pasture and hay for the operation.

We hosted our first production sale in September 1992 and still hold production sales on a regular basis, usually on the second Saturday of May in every other year, but sell bulls year-round on a private treaty basis. Broadlawn Farm has come a long way in the many years of its operation, and the same traits that attracted us to Polled Herefords from the beginning keep us with the breed today.

We offer cattle breeders the heart of our Broadlawn genetic program, so please contact us if you have any questions or are interested in learning more about the Broadlawn operation and cattle. You are always welcome at our farm! Also, we appreciate so much those customers who made our “Always Maternal” Production Sales such a success. We welcome you to join us for our next sale on Saturday, September 24, 2022, which will allow internet bidding through SmartAuctions.co.

In 2013, Jim was honored to receive the Purebred Cattleman of the Year Award from the Mississippi Cattlemen’s Association, and Broadlawn Farm was awarded the Water Conservation 2018 Livestock Environmental Stewardship Award.
